Fellow Compatriots,

I am indeed delighted to join our Christian brothers and sisters to commemorate this year’s Easter celebration.

We thank the Almighty God for granting us the opportunity to celebrate another Easter at a time of great promise and hope for our dear nation, despite the challenges we also have.

Easter, the season in which Christians mark the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, represents the triumph of good over evil; and life over death. It is also a time to show love, forgiveness, compassion and renewed hope in the Grace of God.

The Holy Scripture affirms that happiness and fulfilment in life do not flow from acquiring the best things in life, but in being richer in a relationship with God and fellow human beings.

Let us use the opportunity of this special season to deeply reflect on how every one of us can imbibe the profound teachings of Jesus Christ with renewed vigour.

In so doing and by placing the joy, comfort and happiness of others above ours, we will make a statement that vices such as, hate speech, bigotry, corruption, banditry and terrorism have no place in our nation. We must do all it takes to love our neighbours and display increased spirit of tolerance and accommodation.

I commend those who recognise and support our unwavering efforts to prevent the spread of conflicts in our communities; check wanton criminality and the taking of innocent lives; unite the country; and steer the ship of state to a steady path of economic growth, job creation and development.

While we enjoin law-abiding fellow compatriots to work for peace and social justice in our beloved country, let there be no doubt of our resolve to firmly resist others who may want to make cheap political capital out of current national security challenges.

Our programmes and policies in the last three years have resulted in bringing down the prices of staple crops; gradual improvement of road, rail and electricity infrastructure; and making Nigeria the preferred destination for investors. More than ever before, we are ready to consolidate on these gains and ensure that we improve the lot of our communities in the years ahead.

Thankfully, our Dapchi schoolgirls who were safely released recently after 30 agonizing days in the hands of their abductors, have been reunited with their families. I am very optimistic that all others, including the Chibok girls who are still in captivity will be safely released unconditionally to their families. I urge you to continue to pray for their safe return.

In the meantime, I have given clear instructions to our security agencies to prioritise safety in schools in areas where the humanitarian and security situation are still dire, in addition to ensuring adequate protection of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

As we approach the period of campaigns, I appeal to our political actors and other stakeholders to resist any act that could mar the integrity of our electoral process.

I am optimistic that with God on our side, the dark days of Nigeria’s elections being manipulated by violence and rigging by corrupt politicians and their agents are over. They are confined to the dustbin of history where they rightly belong. I remain committed to bequeathing a legacy of supremacy of the people’s will through the ballot box.

May this year’s Easter celebration bring us renewed hope and confidence as a great nation.

Moscow says it will close US consulate in St Petersburg and expel same number of diplomats from nations that have expelled Russians

Russia is on a retaliation spree. Moscow has said it will expel 60 diplomats and close the US consulate in St Petersburg in retaliation for the expulsion of Russian diplomats over the poisoning of an ex-spy in Britain.

This announcement was made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. He said Russia would expel the same number of diplomats from the nations that have expelled Russian diplomats over the poisoning of Sergei Skripal, 66, and his daughter Julia, 33, in Salisbury earlier this month.

Lavrov said that Jon Huntsman, the US ambassador, had been informed of "retaliatory measures" on Thursday.

Lavrov added that the same will go for other nations that expelled Russian diplomats this week.

After the poisoning of Skripal, who was a Russian double agent, and his daughter in England, Britain expelled 23 Russian diplomats from the UK. Moscow retaliated by also expelling 23 British diplomats from Russia. Then America, in support for their closest ally, expelled 60 diplomats and shut down the Russian consulate general in Seattle. Russia has now replied in kind.

Two dozen countries, including the US, many EU nations and NATO, have ordered more than 150 Russian diplomats out this week in a show of solidarity with Britain.

Bukola Saraki shares full list of the 200 bills the Senate has passed since 2015

Nigerian Senate President, Bukola Saraki says that as of March 29, 2018, 33 months after its inauguration, the 8th Senate had passed a total of 200 bills including Senate Bills, concorrence bills and constitution amendment bills.  

From its inauguration on June 9, 2015 the 8th senate had surpassed the 7th, 6th and 5th Senate in the number of bills passed. While the 7th senate passed only 128 bills in four years, the 6th passed 82 and the 5th senate passed 129 bills.

Saraki took to his twitter handle @BukolaSaraki to make the announcemnet and to congratulate his colleagues for a job well done expressing optimism that in the 15 months that were left, the senate would pass more bills that will affect the lives of Nigerians.

Chinese man, Li Yanping arraigned for concealing $300k at the Abuja airport (Photo)

EFCC, on March 28, 2018 arraigned a Chinese, Li Yanping, before Justice Babatunde Ouadri of the Federal High Court, Abuja on one-count charge of concealing a sum of $300,000 from Customs officers, while attempting to board a flight en route Dubai, on March 15, 2018, at the Abuja airport.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge and Justice Quadri granted him bail in the sum of N10million with two sureties in like sum. He is to be remanded in the custody of the EFCC until the perfection of his bail conditions.

Mum with chronic back pain finds epidural needle in spine 14 years after giving birth

A woman who suffers horrible back pain has discovered she has had part of an epidural needle stuck in her spine from the time she gave birth 14 years ago.

Amy bright, 41, gave birth to her sixth and youngest son Jacob by c-section at a hospital in Jacksonville, Florida in 2003. Shortly after giving birth, she began to experience severe back pain and it has had a debilitating effect on her life ever since. 

Last year she finally discovered the cause of her pain after a CT scan revealed a 3cm-long chunk of needle buried in her spine. The needle had allegedly broken off when she was given an epidural during Jacob’s birth 14 years ago. She said she was "livid, upset and scared" at the revelation. 

The needle in her spine caused extensive nerve damage, leaving Amy with limited use of her left leg and foot.

She said: "Every time I move and walk and bend and twist and sleep, that needle moves inside my spine. For 14 years, I’ve been creating scar tissue in my spine from this needle moving."

Speaking of the pain she has suffered, she explained: "It feels like fire, like a poker next to my tailbone. On occasion, it shoots down the left side of my leg on my calf, and then down and into my foot."

Amy has been told she could be permanently paralysed whether or not the needle is removed now. She will have to rely on pain medication and physical therapy to manage the damage for the rest of her life.

She said: "It has gotten to the point where it just burns constantly. I’m very scared of my future. [My leg] is getting weaker. I’m probably going to be in a wheelchair. It’s scary because I don’t know. I don’t know what my future holds. I’m very paranoid and scared."

Amy is now attempting to sue the hospital where she gave birth, Florida’s Naval Hospital, claiming staff knew the needle had broken off but neglected to do anything about it, even though the damage could have been avoided.

Photo: 98 beggars arrested in Kano State

The Kano State Hisbah Board today said it had arrested 98 beggars in Kano metropolis for allegedly contravening the law on street begging.  

Malam Dahiru Nuhu, the Officer in charge of the board’s anti-begging unit, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria in Kano. Nuhu said that the beggars were arrested at about 12.15 a.m. in different parts of the city, including Bompai, Lodge Road and Yankaba Motor Park. He said that 68 of the arrested suspects were street urchins (almajiris) aged between nine and 17.  

According to the Hisbah official, most of the beggars are from Bauchi, Katsina, Gombe and Yobe States.  He explained that those who were not from Kano would be repatriated to their states and urged them to find something tangible doing to better their lives.  Nuhu said that Kano state indigenes among them would be properly screened, counseled and thereafter released since they were first timers.

Cardi B is said to be expecting her first child with her beau Offset, but she's yet to confirm the widely speculated rumours.

During a video shoot on Wednesday, the "Bodak Yellow" rapper was pictured getting dressed by a stylist who appears to be hiding her growing baby bump under a yellow baggy dress.

In the music video, which features J Balvin and Bad Bunny, Cardi B paid homage to salsa queen Celia Cruz.

President Buhari's visit to Lagos today continues to generate mixed reactions from Lagosians and now a tweeter use @walescure has shared photos showing people being harrased by the police.

Two members of a family were injured after a car smashed into their house as they watched television.

A mother and daughter were both taken to hospital after the crash in Worcester on Friday night.

Robert Beattie, his wife Mel and 15-year-old daughter Tash were reportedly sitting in their living room when the car ploughed through a window at the front of the home.

Mr Beattie told the BBC he had to rescue both family members after the incident left them "shocked" and "confused".

A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

An Indian woman has been arrested for the murder of a 5-year-old girl in India. 

Anita Waghela, 22, lured five-year-old Anjali Saroj with chocolates, then kidnapped and strangled her to death in a women’s toilet at Navsari railway station in Gujarat. According to reports, Waghela killed the child as revenge after the girl's father refused to divorce his wife and marry her.
