Award-winning author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie made news early this month when she appeared on Trevor Noah's show and said that she has a problem with men holding the doors for women just because they are women and consider them weaker beings. According to Chimamanda, men and women should open doors for each other.

''I thing gestures like holding the door shouldn't be gender-based. I think it's a lovely thing to hold the door but we should hold the door for everyone. Like, I hold the door for men and for women. And so I think the idea of someone holding the door for a woman because she's a woman... I have trouble with it.  I'm quite happy for people to hold the door for me. But I'm like, hope they're not doing it because of this sort of idea of chivalry. Because chivalry is really about the idea that women are somehow weak and need protecting. But we know that really, there are many women who are stronger than men'' she said

The National Assembly on May 16 passed the N9.12 trillion ($28.95 billion)  2018 budget.

Real Madrid and Portuguese superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly accepted a two-year suspended jail sentence and fined €18.8m after to end his tax evasion case.

Spanish newspaper El Mundo reported on Friday that Ronaldo, who is currently with the Portuguese national team at the World Cup in Russia, agreed to pay the large fine regarding four tax offences, as well as a two-year jail sentence.

There was jubilation in the rural community of Itipo in the Democratic Republic of Congo as Rev. Lucien Ambunga, the Catholic priest who got infected with Ebola survived the deadly virus.

Father Ambunga who was diagnosed with Ebola last month was taken to Ebola treatment centre in the general hospital in Bikoro where he was quarantined.

After his swift recovery, he returned to Itipo last Friday and was greeted by a joyous crowd, who carried him on their shoulders and chanted “The hero this year is Courage (Father Ambunga’s nickname).”

Another gang member who was declared wanted in relation to the Offa bank robbery has been arrested by the Nigerian Police.

The wanted criminals were apprehended by the operatives of the Intelligence Response Team led by a Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari.

NIGERIA: Man commits suicide in Delta State allegedly because he couldn't afford to pay N15K hospital delivery bill after his wife gave birth

A man on Thursday, June 14, hanged himself in Ozoro comminty, Isoko Local Government Area of Delta State.

According to a Facebook page, Biafra Stars, the man's wife delivered a baby through CS and was charged N15,000 bill, which he couldn't afford. He went into an uncompleted building and hanged himself with a rope.

Sharing the photo, the poster wrote;

"Today being the 14th day of June 2018 at about 1am,a Young Man who resides at uruto quoters Ozoro community hanged himself to death just bec his wife delivered a baby through opetation and the baby and his wife are alive but bec he was charged the sum #15,000 then no money to pay the hospital bills.where are we going to in this country?Just take a look"

Child abuse has become so commonplace that it's in the news at least once every week. Yet, it doesn't make it any less shocking.

These heart-breaking images show a four-year-old girl who has been so badly beaten by her alcoholic father that she can barely open her eyes. The child was also chained up in a toilet and forced to do laundry.

The little girl was found in near darkness with both hands inside a plastic wash basin, scrubbing her father’s clothes. There also appear to be burn marks left by cigarettes on her back.

Mother bags 20 years in prison for punishing her 14-year-old daughter by 'forcing her to consume so much alcohol'

35-year-old Miranda Polston from Kentucky was recently sentenced to 20 years in prison after being charged with forcing her 14-year-old daughter to drink alcohol as punishment.

Polston was arrested in March in Pulaski County and charged with first-degree criminal abuse. She was actually on probation for a felony when she was accused of forcing her daughter to drink alcohol. 

As a result of that, a hearing was held and the judge decided to revoke her probation, sending her to prison for a 20-year sentence.

During the hearing in court, Somerset police revealed that Miranda Polston caught her daughter drinking alcohol on Mar. 10. and decided to punish her by forcing her to drink alcohol to the point of "extreme intoxication to get her sick."

Man selling microwave on Facebook accidentally advertises far more than he bargained for (Photos)

A man accidentally advertised far more than he bargained for while trying to sell a microwave on social media.

He posted a photo of the kitchen appliance to a private Facebook group in Taiwan and wrote: "Brand-new microwave, appliance cabinet size, never used. Pickup or meetup both possible."

He was selling appliances for 2,800 TWD (70 GBP). 

But online users were left shocked after they spotted something very unusual in the photo. In the reflection in the microwave's glass door, they spotted the man was completely naked

Nigerian man sues Canadian government for $10m after getting locked up for eight months over name mix up

A Canadian citizen was held by immigration authorities for eight months in a top-security prison when he was mistaken for a refugee with a different name. Now, he's suing the Canadian government for C$10m ($7.6m, £5.7m).  

47-year-old Olajide Ogunye, born in Nigeria, woke up on the morning of 1 June 2016, and found his home in Toronto surrounded by Canada Border Service agents. 

Narrating his ordeal to BBC, he said an agent presented him with a warrant for the name Oluwafemi Kayode Johnson, a failed refugee claimant who had been deported from Canada in the 1990s whom the immigration authorities believed had illegally returned to the country.  "That is not me," he told them.

He showed them several forms of ID, including his Canadian citizenship documents and a provincial health card. The agents told him they would "sort this out", and drove him to their office where they fingerprinted him. There, they said his fingerprints matched Johnson's and they booked him into Maplehurst Correctional Complex, a maximum-security prison for dangerous offenders.

"I wasn't expecting something like that to me as a Canadian citizen," Ogunye says. For the next 248 days, Ogunye was incarcerated - first in Maplehurst and then in Central East Correctional Centre, another maximum-security prison while CBSA investigated his case.

Now that he is a free man, Ogunye is suing the government for C$10m for wrongful arrest and negligent investigation. CBSA spokesman Barre Campbell told the BBC the agency is "reviewing the matter" and that "it would be inappropriate" to comment further.  

His lawyer, Adam Hummel, says that the CBSA's investigation was marked by delays and procedural irregularities that lengthened Ogunye's stay in prison and took a toll on his mental and physical health.

"For them to keep someone in jail for eight months. it is not really a good thing. I hope they don't do this to somebody else and that is one of the reasons why I'm bringing this to court," Ogunye says.  

Hummel also says the CBSA has never produced the fingerprint sample used to identify Ogunye as Johnson. Ogunye moved to Canada from Nigeria as a refugee with his parents in 1990, and obtained citizenship at 26 years old in 1996.
