Boris Johnson resigns as UK Foreign Secretary

Boris Johnson has resigned as Foreign Secretary amid a growing political crisis over the UK's Brexit strategy.  

This makes him the second senior cabinet minister to quit within 24 hours following Brexit Secretary David Davis's exit. His departure came 30 minutes before Theresa May is due to address Parliament about her new Brexit plan, which has angered many Tory MPs.

In a statement, the government thanked Boris Johnson for his work and said a replacement would be announced shortly.

Spider-Man and Doctor Strange co-creator Steve Ditko found dead in New York apartment

American comics artist, writer and co-creator of Marvel comic superheroes Spider-Man and Doctor Strange, Steve Ditko has passed away aged 90 after being found dead in his midtown Manhattan apartment.

According to New York Police Department spokesman George Tsourovakas, Mr. Ditko was found dead on June 29.

Marvel President Dan Buckley said in a statement "the Marvel family mourns the loss" of Mr Ditko. Steve transformed the industry and the Marvel Universe, and his legacy will never be forgotten.

CAF bans Kenyan referee for life over bribery scandal

A Kenyan referee who had been due to officiate at the ongoing World Cup in Russia has been handed a life ban after being caught in a bribery sting.  

Aden Marwa was filmed receiving a 600-dollar bribe during Confederation of African Football (CAF) assignment in Ghana. He is one of 22 referees sanctioned by CAF in an unprecedented clean up announced this weekend.  

Benue state governor, Samuel Ortom, dissolves his cabinet

Benue state governor, Samuel Ortom, has announced the dissolution of his cabinet. 

A statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government ( SSG) Tony Ijoho SAN, directed  commissioners  and Special Adviser affected by the dissolution to hand over to the next senior person in their offices. He said the dissolution is with immediate effect.

No reason was given for the dissolution, but there had been rumours for about two weeks that Governor Ortom and the leader of All Progressive Congress ( APC) in the state are at logger heads over the governor's plans to seek a second term which the party is against. 

The Governor however retained four (4) commissioners and six (6) Special Advisers. The Commissioners retained are the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of the state Mike  Gusah, Commissioner for Education Dennis Ityavyar, Commissoner for Land, Survey and Solid Minerals Bernard Unenge and Commissioner for Education David Olufo.

Dino Melaye shares photos on IG from his mansion as he returns to Nigeria

Weeks after travelling out for a court approved medical trip, Senator Dino Melaye has returned to Nigeria.

During his ongoing court trail with the Police, magistrate Mabel Segun-Bello ordered the authorites to release the senator's passport, granting him leave to travel out of the country for treatment for a period of 20 days (June 18 to July 8 2018).

He was ordered to return the passport to the custody of the Commissioner of Police of the FCT upon his return.

Another Nigerian man killed in South Africa

Another Nigerian man has been killed in South Africa. The Nigeria Consulate-General in South Africa said the deceased identified as Ozumba Tochukwu-Lawrence, was shot dead at 10 Koppe, Middleburg, Mpumalanga, South Africa, on July 6th.

His attackers were said to have trailed him, shot him six times and left him in a pool of his blood. He died while he was being rushed to the hospital.

His remains has been deposited in a morgue.

Niger Delta University student commits suicide after discovering he had multiple carry-overs

Aduba Daniel, a student of the Niger Delta University in Bayelsa state, died after reportedly drinking Sniper (an insecticide) upon discovering that he had about four carry overs

According to journalist Bodmas Kemepadei, Daniel was rushed to the Tantua hospital, Amassoma, where it was realised that he had drank the whole bottle. All efforts to save him proved abortive

A 45-year-old man nabbed for defiling an 11-year-old girl in Ogun state has blamed the devil for his actions.

Musibau Asinde allegedly accosted the girl in his neighbourhood at Ibese in Ogun state and raped her. Afterwards, the girl returned home and reported to her mother who in turn reported to the police at Ilaro Police Station.

Subsequently, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP Opebiyi Sunday, led a team of detectives to the crime scene and arrested the suspect. 

Family cry out after 2 siblings are abducted from their primary school in Anambra

Two young siblings were reportedly kidnapped from their primary school in Anambra and their location is currently unknown.

The kids, Franklin Ezekwere, 4, and Maryann Ezekwere, 2, were said to have been abducted at the Igwedimma Nursery and Primary School located in the same compound with St Matthew’s Catholic Church, Amawbia in  Awka South Local Government of Anambra State.

School management have been unable to explain what happened to the kids. It was gathered that their school bags were seen in their classes but the teachers were unable to say where they were. Since the incident happened on July 3, 2018, their whereabouts are still unknown.

The governors at a meeting in Enugu state yesterday July 8th, said they would not be donating any of their land to the Federal government for the purpose of building ranches for herdsmen.

Gunmen kidnap two Imo-based entertainers

Two popular entertainers in Imo state, Ugo Stevenson and Izunna Obiakor, have been kidnapped by unknown gunmen in Owerri, the state capital.

According to reports, Stevenson, a 2008 winner of Nigeria Music Awards, was kidnapped while on his way home. His abductors have contacted his wife and are demanding a N5 million ransom for his release. 

Obiakor on the other hand was ambushed and kidnapped while driving in his SUV in Owerri, the state capital. Both incidents happened last week. 

BBC Wold Cup reporter drugged and robbed In Russia

A British reporter for the BBC was drugged and robbed while working at the World Cup in Russia, and two men have been detained in connection with the alleged crime.

Irina Volk, a spokesperson for the Russian Interior Ministry, said:  "as a result of the search operation, a suspect in the robbery of a British national has been detained. Yesterday, the British national reported to the police that he had been robbed in a taxi. As a result of the search operation, officers of the criminal police found the car which the man had taken and one of the suspects had been detained. He is now being questioned."

Nigerian Police force release detailed security arrangement for Ekiti State Governorship election this weekend, deploys 30,000 officers

The Nigerian Police force ahead of the July 14th guber election in Ekiti State has deployed 30,000 police personnel to the state.

The force in a statement signed by its PRO, Jimoh Moshood says it will deal decisively in accordance with the laws with any individual or groups no matter how highly placed, whose utterances or conduct is contrary to the electoral act or that can incite disturbance of public peace during the election.

The Presidency, Senate and Minister of Finance Kemi Adeosun, have kept mute over allegations published by Premium Times on Saturday that she skipped the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and subsequently obtained a forged exemption certificate in 2009.
 

The minister reportedly graduated from the Polytechnic of East London, in the United Kingdom, in 1989, at 22. The scheme is compulsory for all Nigerian graduates, under the age of 30, while those above the age limit are required to obtain an exemption certificate.
 

Several attempts to speak with the minister by journalists have been unsuccessful. Repeated calls and texts to her mobile lines have gone answered.

I feed 2 wives, 7 children with proceeds from fraud – Fake policeman confesses

A fraudster who has been extorting people using a police identity card has been arrested by the police in Sokoto.

Mahmuda Hamza was paraded at the police headquarters in the state on Friday alongside some area boys, and he confessed to extortion using a fake ID card.

Speaking to newsmen, Hamza explained that he took the identity card from a deceased policeman and attached his passport photograph to it.

Punch quotes Hamza as saying: "I am a fraudster and I know I have committed an offence but I am pleading, I will not go into crime again if I am pardoned. I am not an armed robber, but a fraudster. I have two wives and seven children and I feed them all from the money I make through this fraud.
