Evidence suggests that there are important health benefits of consuming at least five servings of a variety of fruits and vegetables daily. That's a total of 5 pieces of fruit and veg, not 5 pieces each. One serving of fruit or vegetables is 80 g.

The 5 A Day initiative is focused on World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines suggesting eating at least 400 g of fruit and vegetables a day to minimize the risk of serious health issues, such as heart disease and stroke
