25-year-old unemployed man, Kabiru Saka, was today arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly touching a married woman, Mrs Faith Ijiogbe's breasts at the Alagbado area of Lagos state on Monday June 11th.

Police prosecutor, Sgt. Dada Wasiu, who arraigned him before the court, said asides the indecent act, Kabiru was also being accused of stealing. He told the court that on the day of the incident, the accused had begged the complainant to give him a carton of canned drinks which accidentally fell off a motorcycle that was taking her to her shop. He husband was on another motorcycle riding behind her.

A 36-year-old truck driver from Ancona in Italy has been arrested for allegedly passing on HIV to women via unprotected sexual intercourse.
A spokesman for police in Ancona said today that 35-year-old Claudio Pinti had been arrested two days earlier in Italy. It is believed that the suspect who traveled all over Italy for work might have consciously passed on the deadly virus to more than 200 sexual partners.

Speaking about the request made by the Nigerian supporters, Russian Minister of Culture and Tourism, Andrei Ernak, told interfax.ru that the request was turned down.

The trial of a former governor of Katsina State, Ibrahim Shehu Shema before Justice Babagana Ashgar of the Federal High Court sitting in Katsina could not continue on June 13, 2018 following an application brought by the defendant challenging the competency of the charge.

The application was moved by counsel representing the defendant,  J.B Daudu SAN asking the court to quash the 26 count charge against his client on the grounds that the star witness, one Nasiru Salisu Ingawa is being prosecuted for the same offence by the ICPC at the Katsina State High Court.According to him,it is an abuse of court process to continue with current matter until that issue is resolved.

Daudu also asked the court to declare section 396(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, ACJA which says all application shall be taken along with the substantive case at the judgment stage.

Two teenagers who were paraded by the Imo state police command for robbery yesterday June 12th, said they ventured into the crime so they could raise money to register for the West Africa Certificate Examination in their school.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, today secured the conviction and sentencing of one Uke Philip Akhator, an Internet fraudster, before Justice P. I Ajoku of the Federal High Court, sitting in Benin City, Edo State, for offenses bordering on obtaining by fraudulent trick. 

Akhator who was prosecuted by the Benin Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, was said to have obtained the sum of One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (N150,000) Only from one Jakub Sani Mohammed by fraudulent tricks.
The offence is contrary to Section 421 of the Criminal Code Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, C39, 2004 and punishable under the same Act. Upon his arraignment on a one count charge, Akhator pleaded guilty to the offence.

The Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the temporary forfeiture of N2.2billion recovered from former Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Adesola Amosu.

Justice Mojisola Olatoregun made the order based on an ex-parte application by the EFCC.

The judge ruled: “An interim order is made forfeiting to the Federal Government of Nigeria the total sum of N2,244,500,000 found and recovered by the commission from the first respondent (Amosu) which sum is reasonably suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activity.”

Justice Mohammed Idris of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos has adjourned to June 27, 2018 for further hearing in a N3.2bn fraud case involving a former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, and others.

Kalu is being prosecuted alongside his company, Slok Nigeria Limited and his former Commissioner for Finance, Jones James Udeogu, for money laundering to the tune of over N3.2bn.

At the last adjourned sitting, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, through its counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, had sought to further amend the charge against the defendants, after closing its case.

However, at the resumed hearing today, June 13, 2018, the prosecution counsel, Oyedepo, informed the court that he was served with copious applications dated June 6, 2018 and filed on June 7, 2018 by the defence counsel led by Kalu Awa, SAN, in opposition to his application to further amend the charge against their clients.

He further told the court that today’s proceedings was meant for the court to either hear his application to further amend the charge against  the defendants or to hear the no-case submission that had previously been filed by the defense counsels  on behalf of their clients.

EFCC says the conviction of two prominent members of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Jolly Nyame and Joshua Dariye in quick succession by a Federal Capital Territory High Court has put a lie to the often repeated charge by critics and cynics that the commission is lukewarm in prosecuting chieftains of the ruling party for corruption.

Nyame and Dariye, both former two-term governors of Taraba and Plateau State respectively, were convicted and sentenced to 14 years in prison on corruption charges.

The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris has approved the request by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to commence an independent audit of detention cells in all police commands and formations in Nigeria including those of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

These visits will enable the NHRC oversee the human rights situation of detainees as well as undertake general audit of the state of Police detention facilities (cells) in the country. This exercise is part of the NHRC 2018 audit of police detention centers in Nigeria.
